Judge Herman Gordon of Houston, 80, died on Wednesday, March 7, 2012. Herman
was preceded in death by his parents, Esther and Sam Gordon; brothers, Harry,
Freddie and Solomon Gordon. He is survived by his wife, Phyllis; daughter,
Nicole, and son, Stephen. He also is survived by his sister, Mary Gordon;
sister-in-law, Rose Gordon Finkelman; nieces, Sandra (Steve) Finkelman, Sarah
(Eric) Gibbs; nephew, Sammy (Sharon Gordon); great- nephews, Michael Gordon,
Josh Gordon, Alex Gordon, Jordan Finkelman, Seth Finkelman, Harvey Gibbs and
Spencer Gibbs, as well as great-nieces, Marissa Finkelman and Elli Gibbs. He
also is survived by his brother-in-law, Elliot Siegel, and sister-in-law, Kay
Ruth Weber.
Herman graduated from San Jacinto High School, the University of Houston with
a bachelor’s degree in business administration in 1954 and received an LLB
from the University of Houston Law Center in 1956. Col. Herman Gordon (ret.)
from the United States Air Force in the Judge Advocate General Department
after serving his country for more than 30 years whereby he received the
Meritorious Service Award and several other high commendations, medals and
honors.
He also was elected as a judge in the Houston 309th District Court and served
as a visiting judge for more than 25 years in courthouses across the state of
Texas, ultimately retiring as a senior district judge. He also served as a
previous chairman for the State Bar Grievance Committee, receiving the Texas
Commendation Award of Service, board of directors and vice president for the
Houston USO, board of directors for the Air Force Association, past post
commander for and life member of AMVETS, previous chapter president of the
Reserve Officers Association, previous lecturer for the HBA and past president
of the Houston Chapter of the Federal Bar Association.
Upon Herman’s retirement, he handled more than 225 mediations and 300
arbitrations as a well-respected member of the American Arbitration
Association and the Association of Attorney Mediators handling cases as
recently as the last few weeks previous to his death. He also served in
countless professional and charitable organizations including Scottish Rite
as a 32nd degree Mason. Herman remained a steadfast champion for the most
vulnerable of society throughout his 56 years of law practice. He served his
country and his profession with great honor, dignity and integrity.
Herman was an active, well-rounded man and loved traveling with his friends
and family. He enjoyed sports, staying abreast of news and politics, and
mostly spending time with his beautiful wife, Phyllis, and their two
children. He also was an avid reader and a consummate student of history.
Herman had a wonderful sense of humor, enjoyed laughing, and making others
laugh. He led a full life, truly was loved, and deeply will be missed by his
friends and family.
Services were held Friday, March 9, 2012, at 1 p.m., at Beth Yeshurun
Cemetery (Post Oak).
